The Cause

The Lubbock Cattle Baron’s Ball has been the primary fundraiser for the Lubbock Chapter of the American
Cancer Society since 1983. Proceeds from the Ball, the largest event in West Texas, annually fund almost
$300,000 in cancer research and patient services. And in recent years, more than $1,800,000 has gone
to cancer research in Lubbock.

Much progress has been made over the past few years in cancer awareness and research. But the search for a cure is far from over…
• A man’s lifetime probability of developing cancer (all sites) is 1 in 2. Prostate cancer is 1 in 6.
• A woman’s lifetime probability of developing cancer (all sites) is 1 in 3. Breast cancer is 1 in 7.
• There were an estimated 91,020 new cancer cases diagnosed and an estimated 34,170 cancer deaths
in Texas in 2007. It is important to note that the cancer death rate has declined for two consecutive years.
• The ACS reports that scientific evidence suggests that approximately 1/3 of the estimated 570,280 cancer
deaths estimated in 2007 were related to poor nutrition, physical inactivity, overweight,
obesity and other lifestyle factors.
• ACS research has benefited anyone who has quit smoking, received a PAP or PSA test, taken Tamoxifen,
been cured of leukemia or had a bone marrow transplant.

Besides the research efforts, funds go toward support services such as patient transportation to treatment,
providing hotel rooms for out-of-town patients and their families, survivor support group meetings,
and summertime camps for children with cancer.
